OWN:A: The one thing money can't buy

About Own A Second

Where the idea came from, and why it exists.

I was listening to an interview where Warren Buffett said "I can buy anything I want, basically, but I can't buy time." That got me thinking: what if you could Buy Time? Own a small piece of it? There are 86,400 seconds in a day, so why not sell each second as advertising space? One second of attention. Your logo, live on the clock, at the exact second you choose, that's yours, every day.

It's a small, slightly theatrical idea. 86,400 seconds in a day, 86,400 chances to be seen on screen at that exact moment. Nobody can buy more time. But for £14, you can own a second of it.

"I can buy anything I want, basically, but I can't buy time."

- Warren Buffett to Bill Gates, Columbia University, January 2017, hosted by Charlie Rose

The long road here

That interview was January 2017 - Buffett and Gates on stage at Columbia. The idea lodged itself in my head… and then sat there for four years while work and life got in the way. In July 2021 I finally did something about it: I hired a developer on Fiverr to build a first version - then paid a UK developer five times as much to finish what Fiverr started. It launched in 2022… and then work took over again. I never promoted it. The clock ticked away, every second unsold.

But the idea kept following me around. So in 2026 I came back and rebuilt it from scratch - this time with an AI assistant writing the code while I made every decision about what to build. One person, no company, no office, no team. It's also why you're at ownasecond.ai rather than a .com: this site was built with AI.

Every second on the clock is real. Once it's yours, your logo appears at your exact moment, every single day. And when all 86,400 sell out, the day is frozen forever as a numbered archive - a permanent little piece of internet history - and the clock starts again.
